In the Bible, Jesus say that we should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s [Matthew 22:21] . Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to let gay people marry each other, should pay attention. In America marriage is a civil institution and gay marriage is legal. By the words of Jesus, it is not the business of Christians to interfere with either.
Prior to writing this post, I felt that people had already said everything there was to be said about that woman citing her religion to justify discriminating against gays. But today I learned that Pope Francis visited her and praised her intolerance of people who don’t share her beliefs.
As Popes go (I’m not a Catholic myself) I rather like Pope Francis. He is from the “Jesus is a Liberal” school. He has no patience for people who think that poverty is the fault of the poor. But he went too far when he expressed support for an American who imposed her beliefs on others, in violation of their legal rights and her oath to uphold the law.
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
People like Kim Davis are one reason that the original colonists fled to America to pursue Life, Liberty and Happiness. No other country in the world has a constitution that enshrines these rights. If you don’t believe in The Constitution of the United States of America, Kim Davis, renounce your citizenship and take your intolerance somewhere else. How about Mars?
